Anger & You Quiz Discussion – Part 2C (Continued):

The answers are all false on the “Anger & You” quiz; does this surprise you? Many people have misconceptions about anger. Did you know that “anger” for many, many years (probably before most of us were born or grown up) was the only socially permissible and acceptable emotion for a man to show (men was taught to be cold-hearted and not to show emotions; boys don’t cry). If a man showed any other emotion, they were labeled as “weak-not a real man.” In some homes, cultures, and countries, this is still believed today. Wow! No wonder there is so much domestic violence in the home. This belief seed was planted long ago by the enemy to destroy families.

You thought that was something, listen to this: for women it was the opposite - it was the only socially unacceptable emotion - “nice girls don’t get angry.” The enemy was setting the women up to allow men to totally dominate them; by any means necessary. Adam’s disobedience opened up Pandora’s Box. It opened the door for every evil thing we can and cannot imagine; no wonder God does not want us to walk in disobedience - He says it’s the same sin as witchcraft.

Expressions of Anger
- Anger becomes a problem when it is expressed in a way that hurts you or hurts others; or when it is the only feeling you allow yourself to experience. You must be able to identify destructive behaviors caused by anger and clarification of description of any. Here is a list of destructive behaviors that anger can cause if not dealt with properly:
                   -Physically abusing others
                   -Emotionally abusing others
                   -Breaking personal items
                   -Breaking people’s possessions
- We must examine ourselves if we truly want to combat anger.

During this Session, we are going to define anger and its causes:

Four Classes of Anger Defined:

Webster’s definition of Anger: 1) a feeling of extreme displeasure, hostility, indignation or exasperation toward someone or something; rage, wrath. 2) Trouble, pain, and affliction.

  1. Resentment – ill will and suppressed anger generated by a sense of grievance.

  2. Anger – a feeling of extreme displeasure, hostility, indignation or exasperation toward someone or something; rage, wrath. 2) Trouble, pain, and affliction (as stated above).

  3. Rage – closely related to the sense of intense, un-contained, explosive emotion. Rage appears to be more justified by circumstances. For example, when one feels indignation at seeing the mistreatment of someone or something dear and worthy.

  4. Fury – more destructive

  5. Wrath - fervid anger that seeks vengeance or punishment on a large scale.

What Makes Us Angry? – Part 2B (Continued)

  • Hurt (usually from the past) – childhood experiences – emotional, physical, sexual abuse, adolescence experiences (this is when satan really begin to play with your mind by feeding you lies about yourself and others), also, hurts can come from adult experiences such as job, marriage, and relationships.

  • Frustration (usually in the present) – examples:
           - Something does not go your way

           - You can’t do something you want to do when you want to do it

           - Can’t watch what you want on TV

           - You want to take a shower but there is no water

           - You want to be alone but people will not leave you alone

  • Fear or Anxiety – we feel threatened or anxious
           - Fear – you are threatened physically or emotionally. This can also be you are afraid

you will be made to look like a fool.

           - Anxiety – you anticipate a problem as if it had already happened. Anxiety is a

disturbed state of mind produced by real or imaginary fears. It is overcame by

             trusting in God (Ps 37:1-5 – read); prayer (Phil. 4:6); God’s care (1 Peter 5:6, 7).

Review Previous Session:

-Biblical References to Anger

-Anger is the second most frequently mentioned emotion in Scripture; mentioned more than 455 times in the Old Testament with 375 of those referring to God’s anger; God get angry with us when we disobey Him.

-Anger is a God-given emotion, and is one of the most powerful and controlling of all the emotions. When anger is not properly dealt with, it is one of the most dangerous.

-God gave us anger as an emotion, but He also gave us instructions on how to handle, express, or control it. Some scriptures on Anger:

  • Proverbs 15:1 – “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (this shows angry is already in you).”

  • Proverbs 16:32 – “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”

  • Proverbs 19:19 – “Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.”(If we rescue impatient friends from their problems once, we will probably rescue them again and again). Read rest from bible.

  • Matthew 5:43-48 – “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45In that way, you will be acting as true           children of your Father in heaven. For He gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46If you love only those who love you, what rewards is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

  • Romans 12:19 – “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

  • Ephesians 4:26 – “Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath.”

  • James 1:19,20 – “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man swift  to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not     produce the righteousness of God.

-Anger is not the problem. The problem is how we handle or express our anger. An unhealthy expression of anger is Sin.

-In the above Scriptures, it tells us how to handle and not to handle anger so we will not sin when we get angry.

-An appropriate or productive use of anger is when Jesus became angry at the money changers and the Pharisees. An inappropriate or unproductive use of anger was in the Garden of G when Peter became angry at the soldiers when they came to arrest Jesus and cut one of their ears off; he sinned by using violence when he was angry.
