Domestic Violence Series for May 31, 2012 (Part 2) - "Domestic Violence Myths & Realities"

Domestic Violence Series (Part 2)

II. Domestic Violence Myths and Realities

MYTH: The problem of domestic violence is greatly exaggerated.
REALITY: Every nine seconds in the United States, a woman is battered. Battering has been cited as the greatest single cause of injury among women in the United States.

MYTH: Men and women have always fought; it is natural.
REALITY: All couples will disagree at one time or another. But it is important to remember that anger is a feeling while violence is a behavior. It is possible to be angry without becoming violent. Battering is a crime of power and control.

MYTH: Domestic violence only happens in the lower economic classes and minority populations.
REALITY: Domestic abuse of women occurs in families from all social, racial, economic, educational and religious backgrounds. It occurs in towns, suburbs, rural areas and inner cities.

MYTH: Pregnancy will protect a woman from battering.
REALITY: Pregnant women are battered at rates of 15-20%. There is no subgroup of women immune to the threat of domestic violence.

MYTH: If a woman wanted to, she could leave her abuser.
REALITY: We've all heard that a man's home is his castle, but that same home may be a prison for a woman. The barriers to escape may be invisible, but they are extremely powerful. Women stay in abusive relationships for many reasons:
  • She loves him and values his good qualities.
  • She is economically dependent on him.
  • Because he has destroyed her other relationships, she has no other emotional support.
  • Fear of failure. Our culture has put the burden of a successful marriage on the woman.
  • Religious beliefs about marriage.
  • Not wanting to deprive the children of their father.
  • He tells her each incident will be the last one.
  • Fear of more violence
MYTH: Domestic violence does not affect the children since they are not usually aware of the abuse.
REALITY: Interviews with children of battered women reveal that they have seen, heard, and can describe detailed accounts of violence that their mother or father never realized they had witnessed. Children also witness the consequences of the abuse after it has occurred. Symptoms experienced by children who have witnessed domestic violence include:
  • Sleep disorders
  • Headaches
  • Stomach aches
  • Depression
  • Isolation from friends
  • Bedwetting
  • Truancy
  • Learning problems
  • In addition, an estimated 40% to 50% of men who abuse women also abuse children.
MYTH: Battered women are masochistic and crazy; they provoke and enjoy the abuse.
REALITY: Our society's willingness to blame the battered woman for her abuser's behavior by looking for flaws in her personality or moral character is taking the easy way out. In studies of women who are battered in their intimate relationships, researchers have found no evidence of serious psychological problems before entering the abusive relationship. It's impossible to understand the batterer by researching the character of the victim.

MYTH: Marital rape does not really happen.
REALITY: Surveys have revealed that from 20% to 37% of women who have been battered by their husbands were also raped by their husbands.

MYTH: Men who abuse women are mentally ill and not responsible for their actions.
REALITY: Battering is a complex behavior that stems from individual psychology and male socialization, but in the vast majority of instances, it is not a result of mental illness. Batterers are not out of control. They use violence as a way to gain and maintain control over their partner and the relationship. Domestic battering is a crime, and as with all other crimes, the batterer is responsible for his or her behavior and its consequences.

MYTH: Alcohol and drug use cause domestic violence.
REALITY: There is little scientific evidence to support the theory that alcohol and drugs directly produce violent and abusive behaviors. There is no evidence to suggest that alcohol treatment, by itself, will be effective in changing abusive behavior. It should be noted that many men who batter report no history of addiction or misuse of alcohol or other substances. Likewise, only a portion of those individuals addicted to or misusing substances also batter.

MYTH: Batterers cannot change.
REALITY: Batterers can, and do change. When a batterer is motivated, treatment groups can facilitate good outcomes. Abusive behavior, however, is self-rewarding; the batterer is rewarded for violent behavior by feelings of power and control or by the immediate gratification of a personal desire. Motivation to change often comes only after being held accountable by the criminal justice system. The challenge for successful treatment is helping the batterer recognize and accept responsibility for abusive behavior, and finding personal motivation for long-term behavioral change.

MYTH: Once the violence stops, everything will be okay.
REALITY: Stopping the physical violence may not make the relationship a healthy one. If threats and manipulation replace violence as a control technique, there may be little change in the battered woman's emotional environment and daily life. Chronic abuse can cause serious psychological harm. Even after escaping the abusive relationship, many woman experience a long-term inability to trust and alterations in sense of identity.

MYTH: Domestic violence is only a family problem.
REALITY: The effects of domestic violence extend far beyond the family. When factors such as medical costs, absenteeism, lost wages, court costs, pain, suffering and lost quality of life are considered, it is important that domestic violence be treated as a significant social problem.

Domestic Violence Series for May 29, 2012 "Introduction" (Part 1B)

Domestic Violence Series (Part 1B)

God ALWAYS gives you a way of escape from the abusive relationship BUT He is NOT going to force you to leave! You must decide to leave and take the next step of walking out the door!! Don’t fear your abuser when you leave; God is with you! The abuser instills fear in you with threats and intimidations to make you afraid so you will want to leave. But trust God and follow the directions He will give you to lead you out and He will provide and protect you!
When I was in those abusive relationships (I had backslid) God protected and watched over me. Every time the guy would put the loaded gun to my head (most of the time he was in a drunken stupor or high) with his finger on the trigger, God stopped him! Every time the guy would choke me until I almost passed out, God would not let me die – even though sometimes I wanted to; I wanted the abuse to be over with and I saw that as my way out! However, God said, “NO SO!” God protected me, is and will continue to protect you because He loves us and has a great plan and purpose for our lives; He lets us know this in Jeremiah 29:11 ( “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” www.biblegateway.com – NLT – all Scripture that is quoted will come from biblegateway.com).
When God bring you out of that abusive relationship, DO NOT GO BACK! The person who is abusing you is under the control of the devil and CANNOT CHANGE OVERNIGHT BY HIM/HERSELF; THEY MUST BE DELIVERED BY GOD!! Don’t listen to their lies when they say they have changed; they have not! The abuser’s purpose is to destroy you! God let me knew that the devil sent the last abuser into my life to totally destroy me and he would have succeeded if God had not been protecting me. With this in mind, don’t keep putting your child(ren) or yourself at risk for the sake of “love” which in reality is not love but bondage and control! Here is the meaning of real love according to God’s Word; this is the God kind of love:
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (New Living Translation (NLT):
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Ephesians 5:25-27 tells us how a husband is supposed to treat his wife: “25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault” (NLT).
Ephesians 5:22-24 tells what a wife should do: “22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything” (NLT).
Marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman (Genesis 1:27-28: “27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground”- NLT; Genesis 5:2Mark 10:6: “But ‘God made them male and female’ from the beginning of creation”-  NLT); it parallels the union that exists spiritually between Christ and His Bride, the Church (the above Scriptures proves this)!
The love a husband has for his wife is symbolic of the love Christ has for His Church and the wife’s love for her husband is symbolic of how Christ’s Church is to submit herself to Him (again, you see this in Ephesians 5:22-27). When the husband and wife love each other the way God says to love, they are obeying Him. Therefore, it is very important to be whole and an individual person before you get married; otherwise, you will not be able to obey God in this. In order to be whole and an individual person after the abusive relationship, God will have to give you an inner healing so don’t be in a rush to get into another relationship once God brings you out of the current abusive relationship! God has to take you through your cleansing process; your process of deliverance – because all that junk (name calling, threats, fear, intimidation, etc.) that was poured into you, day after day by your abuser and the results (low self-esteem, codependency, anger, lack of confidence, etc.), must come out of you before you go into another relationship!
God will restore you if you allow Him too! The length of time it takes for your deliverance and restoration process depends on you! However, this must be done before you will be able to have a healthy, godly relationship with anyone else; otherwise, you will end up with another abusive man/woman and take old baggage into the new relationship – the cycle of abuse will continue in your life and your child(ren) life! Stop the drama once God bring you out of the current abusive relationship or if He has brought you out, make sure you are whole and complete before going to the next relationship!
I know from experience what it is like not to allow God to deliver and restore you when He bring you out of the abusive relationship; I jumped from one relationship to another – trying to forget the previous person – it did not work.
This only put me deeper into the bondage of domestic violence and abuse and made me more anger and bitter to the point many times the devil told me to end my life and the abuser’s too but again, God said, “NOT SO!” So you see, I know what you are going through; I have been there many, many, many times!! If it had not been for God on my side, I would either be dead and in hell, in a mental hospital or in prison for murder!!! No joke!! For all those who do not know me or my story, you can read it in my book “Unholy Matrimony: Healing For The Abused Woman;” order a copy from Lulu.com (you can download it right away) – if you cannot afford it, contact me @ drdehooks@abusedwoman.org and I will send you a free copy.
In October 2006, God put an end to me going from relationship to relationship; He told me “Enough is enough” and snatched me out of the last abusive marriage – I have not been in another abusive relationship or marriage since then and WILL NEVER BE! Praise the Lord!!! I refuse to allow myself to get caught up with the wrong guy anymore; I know who I am in Christ and I will NEVER again go looking for love in all the wrong places – I know God loves me and He will put the right man in my life when it is time – not in any hurry! Right now I am enjoying me and building a deeper more intimate relationship with God!!! God has been delivering, restoring and preparing me since November 2006 so I could do what He called me to do: Heal His Women!! In November 2006, God spoke to me (after he delivered me from unforgiveness towards the last abuser) and told me to heal His women. In June 2007, God begin my ministry of helping abused women recover. Now, God has given me many different platforms to use to reach His abused women.
You see, I know God is not a respecter of persons; just as He delivered me from the bondage of domestic violence and abuse and restored me, He can and will do it for you if you give Him a chance.
Once your process of deliverance and restoration has reached the point where you desire to be married again (you will know and definitely God will know) ask God for a compatible mate; compatibility is the key to a God ordained mate. No, God is not going to pick a mate for you because He gives us a choice but He will present you with a person compatible to you and it is up to you to accept or reject who God put in your path. In Genesis 2:18: (“And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” – NKJV) God said He would give Adam a help mate who was compatible to him (the NLT version says “I will make a helper who is just right for him”) or equally yoked with him.
I found out the hard way we as children of God (even when we do not know we are a child of God) are not compatible with everyone – even if the person is confessing Christ. Everyone does not have the same belief or moral system so if you connect with someone who does not believe as you, there can be a conflict in the relationship – this includes friendships also. Deuteronomy 7:3: (“You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters”) proves this to us; God warned the Israelites not to marry the Canaanites.
The Canaanites did not serve God, they worshipped false gods. God did not want His people to be corrupted by unholy peopleAmos 3:3 asks the question “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” The answer is NO, they cannot! How can God and the devil agree? God stands for holiness and the devil for unholiness. God gives life through His Son Jesus (John 10:10) and the devil steals, kills and destroys (John 10:10). This is broken down for us even further in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18:
14 Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. 18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty” (NLT).
Before I end the “Introduction” and start the teaching, I want to leave you with this tidbit: an unbeliever can be someone confessing to be born again but does not believe as you do; according to the Word of God. There are people who believe in God but not Jesus! ANYONE who does not believe according to the Word of God are unbelievers; they have their own doctrine!!!! This is what Paul told Timothy in 1Timothy 1:3-4:
“3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith” (NKJV).

Domestic Violence Series for May 24, 2012 "Introduction" (Part 1A)

Domestic Violence Series (Part 1A)

I. Introduction
There are too many children growing up dysfunctional because they have been exposed to violence in the home at a young age. These children have either witnessed violence and abuse or were victims themselves and never gotten any treatment or dealt with it. That is why children that comes from a domestic violence and abuse household are said to be “the forgotten victims” (“A survey of 6,000 American families found that 50 percent of men who assault their wives, also abuse their children. (Pagelow,"The Forgotten Victims: Children of Domestic Violence,"1989” - http://www.acadv.org/children.html).
The parents or someone else have told the child to “suck it up,” “deal with it,” or “get over it” but it is not that simple – the child and no one else can get over the effects of childhood domestic violence and abuse by themselves!!
Once the child has experienced domestic violence and abuse in the home or in their environment, he/she will grow up thinking domestic violence and abuse is normal behavior in a family. This way of thinking will cause the child to become either the abuser or victim of domestic violence and abuse when he/she grows up. Here are two sources that will confirm what I just said is true (my life and many other women I have counseled is also proof):

1. Circle of Hope web site (http://www.gacircleofhope.org/effects_on_children.html): “Children who grow up in abusive homes may become abusers or victims in their own relationships. They learn from an important male role model that violence toward a loved one is acceptable. Children who live in violent homes are affected even if they are not the appointed targets of abuse. Parents often think that their children are not aware of what is going on at home but from very early ages, they generally know or sense what is happening. Children who are in crisis as a result of abuse or violence in their homes may or may not be able to openly talk about their anxieties, fears and concerns and often act out these feelings and give non-verbal clues. Problem behaviors are not unusual for children in crisis, especially those from violent homes. It is important to recognize these types of behaviors for what they are - a way of communicating how they are feeling. Their behaviors are good indicators of how they are coping.”

2. An article written by Dr. Annette Nay, Ph.D., “Living with an Abuser” (http://www.three-peaks.net/annette/Abuser.html): “Men who abuse women, do so to control them because they do not or will not control themselves. Abusing others is usually a learned behavior. Children that grow up with an abuser in the home tend to become abusers themselves because this is what was modeled for them. This behavior becomes the way to handle life and its problems. Children in homes where abuse is going on are learning this behavior now!
The girls are learning to be doormats to become abused in the future if not already being abused by the male abuser in their home. The boys are learning to be abusers because that is how they see this is how they are to treat women.
No matter how lousy the home life for children living with an abuser, this home life becomes the template of what home is. When the child looks for a mate, subconsciously s/he searches for the opposite part of the equation that will reenact the home life atmosphere. Example: The little girl sees mother verbally, emotionally, and/or physically abused. The child subconsciously searches for a mate that will abuse her as Father did mother, even though she desperately wants to get out of her home of origin because of the abuse. The reason for this is that this is what a normal home life looks like to her, she knows no other. A happy loving relationship is foreign She will be abused, feel worthless, and her children will learn these behaviors and continue the cycle one generation after another.”
It is imperative as the parent to give and show your child(ren) the love and care they need while they are young! It is the parent’s responsibility to let their child(ren) know they love them and will protect them no matter what!!! This is to the parents: if you are still in the abusive relationship, not only do you need a safety plan but your child(ren) need one (will discuss in more detail later and give you a sample plan for you and your child).
This information that I will be sharing with you over the next couple of weeks will show you what happens in detail to your child(ren) when they are victims of or witness domestic violence and abuse. This detailed explanation will help you decide whether you will stay with your abuser or leave; you will see the effects your decision will have on your child(ren) in the long run. Remember, your child(ren) safety is at stake!!! The choice is yours and you as a parent also have a responsibility to protect your child(ren) from ANY hurt, harm or danger – DO NOT CHOOSE THE ABUSER OVER YOUR CHILD(REN)!!! If you do, it will cause dire consequences for you and them!
I know from experience that when a person is in an abusive relationship they cannot think straight; their mind is wavy. But when their child(ren) is in danger, that should cause their parental instinct to kick in enough for them to seek help for the child(ren) which in turn will get help for them also. Therefore, I beseech (plead with) you to seek direction from God to get you out of that abusive relationship!! Pray to Him so He can lead you to the right people, agency, church, clergy, etc. (whatever way He wants to use to bring you out). I know God will bring you out because He brought me out of seven abusive marriages and numerous abusive relationships (family, so called friends, etc.). Know that you are not alone!! God cares what happen to you! He did not put you that abusive relationship; that was your choice but He is there to get you out. When I said it was your choice I am not saying abuse is your choice. You got into that relationship looking for love and happiness but the guy (or woman if you are a man) deceived you and were most likely sociopaths so now they are abusing you. It is not your fault! You do not deserve to be abused!! I know about making the wrong decision in choosing a mate; I chose seven to marry and they all ended up deceiving me and abusing me. All I am saying is don’t allow them to continue to deceive you! Think of your child(ren)! The decision you make will affect them too!!
There have been too many abusive relationships ending in tragedy – abuser killed the whole family and then his/herself.
ABUSE IS NOT LOVE!! This is the basic definition of the word “abuse” from dictionary.com:
1. To use wrongly or improperly; misuse
2. To treat in a harmful, injurious, or offensive way
3. To speak insultingly, harshly, and unjustly to or about; revile; malign.
4. To commit sexual assault upon.
5. Obsolete - to deceive or mislead.
6. Harshly or coarsely insulting language
7. Bad or improper treatment; maltreatment
You do not deserve to be treated this way!!! Dr. Myles Munroe said, “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable” and that is so true! It is apparent that the abuser does not know the purpose to the relationship he/she is in! They do not know how valuable you are to God!! If they did, they would not abuse you!! You are very valuable to God! He made you in His image (Genesis 1:27) for His glory! Not to be abused! Don’t subject yourself and your child(ren) to an abusive environment! It is not worth it! Staying in an abusive relationship will destroy you and your child(ren)! Know also that God loves you and your child(ren) and He made you’ll fearfully and wonderfully (Psalms 139:14). Again, God does not want you’ll to be abused!!!!
